SALSA

History & Style

SALSA MUSIC AND DANCE

Salsa is one of the most popular Latin social dances. It is danced to the rhythm of the music that has the same name. It is a couple dance, but it can also be danced alone. It was created by Puerto Ricans, Cubans and other Hispanic Americans. His steps have African and European influences. Salsa has become very popular in the world since the 70’s 1970s in conjunction with the spread of Hispanic cultural identity around the world.

Today salsa dancing has different styles from the regions where this genre has developed. There is a standard basic step in all styles. But each salsa style has its own way of dancing and executing the steps.

At Infinity Baila Studios we teach Salsa Cross Body Style On1 and Mambo

Salsa On1, also called LA style (referring to Los Angeles) or line style. Is danced on a linear structure, being the cross-body-lead the most distinctive part of it, as is used to change from one side of the line to the other. Line Salsa can be very fast and explosive as well as slow and flavorful.

In LA Style the first beat is emphasized. The leader of the pair takes the first step forward in the sequence.

Mambo is one of the many ways salsa can be made. Mambo music is one of the genres that brings together salsa.
Mambo is danced in line in time 2. It is a more elegant style, is more circular than on1 style, and traditionally it is danced following the rhythm of the congas. However, today many dancers are guided by the numerical structure of 1,2,3-5,6,7, using the 2 and 6 as main beats.

Both Salsa and Mambo are performed in many countries; you just have to choose which is your type or if your type is both styles 🙂
